The Albertlanders - a movie and talk
Presented by Albertland descendent, former BHS President and life member, Alec Utting.
In 1862, nonconformists migrated from Britain to New Zealand to start a new life in
what they called Albertland (Port Albert, Wellsford, Matakohe, Paparoa).
For almost all of these arrivals, life was not what they expected. The Albertlanders’
Story is a 2012 film commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of Albertland
settlers. Presented by Albertland descendant, former BHS President, and life member
Alec Utting, it tells the story of grit, determination, despair, and hope.
The Albertland story is also the story of Alec’s great-grandmother, Sarah Ann Shepherd
(nee Longbottom), who was one of the 1862 settlers.

To retain the vitality of each species, Birkdale growers commissioned farmers out of Auckland to grow
new plants ready for annual planting.” North Shore Heritage – Thematic Review Report , Vol 2. P109
