Our November talk has a slight change. Still focused on Glenfield, we are delighted to present Nancy Naea, who will be speaking at our final meeting for 2024.
Those who attended our Heritage Festival event on Sunday 13 October may have heard Nancy’s reminiscences about exploring the bush, playing in paddocks and walking on gravel roads. We have asked Nancy to speak again on Growing Up In Glenfield.
As late as the 1960s, Glenfield was still a mostly rural land of strawberry fields, farms, and pastures. However with the extension of the motorway to Wairau Road in the late 1960s, Glenfield evolved into a thriving population centre, with most of the farmland subdivided by the end of the decade.
The photo shows the Mission Hall that was built in a single day, September 4 1915. This hall still stands proudly where it was built on the corner of Glenfield Road and Bartley Avenue.
Copies of the book “Rural Glenfield” will be available for sale at the Museum priced at $5 . This book has many wonderful photos of the old days in Glenfield, typical of other parts of the North Shore.
Afternoon tea will be available following Nancy’s talk.
