Armistice Day – What happened, how did the end of WW1 have an impact on WW2, where are the WW1 War Memorials on the North Shore? There will be a presentation about topics related to Armistice Day and the opportunity to look at WW1 items from the Museum display, supplemented with items from private collections.

Afternoon tea will be provided.

Roberts – The Birkenhead Grocer
William Ernest Roberts was Alec’s maternal grandfather. Alec will be talking about his
grandfather’s work as a grocer and his involvement in various Birkenhead community groups.
William Roberts opened his grocery shop in 1923. This presentation will be a great opportunity
to find out more about Birkenhead 100 years ago.
Cost - $5 to non-members (to assist museum upkeep).  Afternoon tea provided

Topic:  The Borough of Birkenhead was constituted in 1888.  So what did the area we know as Birkenhead today look like before then?  This talk assumes a nominal date of 1880 and explores aspects of life back then: population and occupations, where people lived, churches, road and water communications, as well as who the original pioneer families were.

Topic:  Bottles of Birkenhead presented by Lee Urqhart, a member of the Auckland Historical Bottle and Collectibles Club.  Lee has collected bottles and assorted treasures for 25 years and has a wonderful store of knowledge and advice to share on all things bottles.
